This page describes the new features of TV-Browser 3.0. '''This version hasn't been released yet!'''

== The 30-Seconds-Highlights ==
* Design: Tooltips in the program table. They indicate by which Plugin shows have been marked, running time of a show etc.
* Clarity: Long titles are shortened, the commonly displayed content is shorter, the column width has been optimized etc. All of these features are customizable, of course.
* More Future-Proof: Optimization for Java 6, Java 7, OpenJDK, Windows 7, Ubuntu 9.10. However this version won't operate with Java 5 anymore.
* Integration: TV-Browser fits better into your available platforms: Regarding shortcuts, designations, order of menubar items, colors and other details.
* Performance: This version is once again significantly faster (and needs less memory) than its previous versions, even though there are many new features.

== The detailed overview ==
TV-Browser 3.0 has been developed since mid 2008 as the successor of TV-Browser 2.7 (while all other 2.7.x-versions "only" fixed bugs). More than [http://tvbrowser.org:8080/jira/secure/IssueNavigator.jspa?mode=hide&requestId=10180 500 changes, bugfixes and new features] have been addressed and implemented. Mainly focused on making the program easier to use by removing many "annoying thingies", better adjusted preferences etc.

To further improve quality the source code has been examined with many static code-analysis tools to find and fix hidden programming errors. That doesn't mean TV-Browser is error-free because of this, but at least we can rule out certain programming errors now.

Only a few of the new features are described below, go ahead and discover the remaining improvements while trying. :)
== Development (the numbers) ==

For all you fans of statistics here are a few numbers of the development:
* TV-Browser is being developed since 2003 and has (combined with the default plugins) more than 200,000 lines of source code ([https://www.ohloh.net/p/tvbrowser/analyses/latest Source]).
* According to the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/COCOMO COCOMO]-Model that's the equivalency of 51 man-years of development time and a development budget of 2,800,000 Dollars. These numbers do not acurately represent the reality, but it actually took a few years of effort to develop this software.
* Off of [http://sourceforge.net/projects/tvbrowser/files/ Sourceforge] alone the different versions of TV-Browser have been [http://sourceforge.net/projects/tvbrowser/files/ downloaded] circa 4 Million times. Not including downloads off of other download sites as well as all installations via Linux-Distributions.
* Over the years [https://www.ohloh.net/p/tvbrowser/contributors 18 different developers] have left their marks developing this project. But these days there are only a few active developers (which is why we always like to welcome new faces).
Bananeweizenhttps://enwiki.tvbrowser.org/index.php?title=Filter_rules&diff=2891Filter rules2010-10-30T10:28:52Z
Bananeweizen: Filterrules moved to Filter rules

== Filterrules ==
On the upper right of the TV-Browsers Iconbar (funnel-icon) you can filter out the broadcasts. You can see all broadcasts, only marked or you can define your own filter and use them here.

What does that mean?

For instance you can only show shows which are called "Zeit im Bild" and broadcasted on "ORF" or see only broadcasts which are longer than 40 minutes and stereo.

And now "How to do that?!":

As an example i will show you how to filter broadcasts stations (...and there are quite much more possiblities ;-))...

Behind the funnel-icon is a pulldown menu. By default the "show all" is marked, which will mean that no filter is set an you see all broadcasts from all stations. By choosing "Edit filter..." a window will show where you can define, redefine or delete your filtersets.

== Create a filter ==
In our case we want to add a new filter. So just click the "New..." Button ;-).

Now a dialog is presented with three areas:

''1. Filter name:''
Here you put the "prettyname" of the filter you are defining. In our case "Austrian Channels".

''2. Filter rule:''
Here the filterrules are defined. As the example shows you can link several filter components (more later in the text) and associate them using "and", "or", "not" also parenthesise is possible. But in our case we still do not have filter components, so let's goon there ;-)

''3. Filter components:''
Here you can see your defined filter components and define your statements which are used in your filter-queries . ATTENTION: All filter components you define are NOT unique for THIS filter. By deleting one you might kill some other filters!

== Create a filter component ==
Now we are going to create a filter component wich will filter for all austrian channels.

As first you have to click "New". Now there are also several things to be defined:

''1. Component name:''
That is the name of your filter component (NOT the name of the filter!).
In our case we will type in "AustrianChannels".

''2. Description:''
Here you should place a short description of you filter component. This will be show on the filter-editting-menu!
In our case "only austrian channels" that's okay, isn't it? ;-))

''3. Type:''
Now it is going to be interesting. Here you have to choose between the different possiblities. You can choose "Program length" (ie all programs longer than 20 minutes) or "Additional Information" (ie Subtitles). But in our case we want to see dedicated channels so we choose "Channel".

''4. Component settings''
Now you simply check all the channels you want. In our case the austrian like orf-1, orf-2, atv,...

That's it. Finish the definition part by clicking "OK" and your filter component is created. You can define some more filter components within this session and they will be link to the filter with an "or" statement automatically.

== Examples for filterrules ==

A detailed example can be found at: [[Filterrules_-_Example:_Subtitle| Filterrules - Example: Subtitle]] (to be written..) or [[Filterrules_-_Example:_Films| Filterrules - Example: Films]]

The Country code [[plugin]] replaces the country code abbreviations in the ''origin'' field by the full country names. Example: If the origin field read "D/I" before using the plugin, it will afterwards read "Germany/Italy". You will see these changes in the program table as well as in the program info dialog.

Attention: This plugin modifies the ''origin'' field directly during downloading new TV data. That means it will not change the origin field for already existing program info. The same is true for deactivation or deinstallation of the plugin: Already modified program data will stay modified.

= Welcome =

On this page we collect ideas for students projects for the [http://code.google.com/soc/2008/ Google summer of code]. Feel free to contribute to this page.

= Requirements for students =
* For each of the ideas you need Java knowledge, since the whole TV-Browser project is written in Java. The Google summer of code is not intended for learning this programming language, but to support open source projects by doing "real work" in the context of the project.
* Communication is done using the TV-Browser forum, email, the TV-Browser issue tracking system.
* You need to communicate in German or English with the other TV-Browser developers.
* In addition to the detailed tasks for each project idea we expect the following from you
** enough spare time to be able to really tackle the task. This is not done in 2 weeks.
** motivation to really reach something and not just to try and get the money (which is not possible btw.)
** proper documentation (where necessary). We want to see that you don't just start hacking, but follow good engineering practice by discussing possible solutions and so on.
** user documentation in our wiki

= Topics =
If you have an idea for a topic on your own, please just add it to this list or discuss it with us in the forum. As a starting point we have added some topics below.

== Recreate Filter GUI ==

The User Interface of the filter settings should be rewritten. At the moment only people with deep knowledge about computers are able to add new complex filters. The new GUI should it make possible for everyone to easily add and create filters, even if those filters represent complex conditions using AND, OR and NOT. The task shall not only include the implementation of a new user interface, but also a proposal and usability rating for different UI approaches.

== Enhance Firewall detection ==

At the moment the firewall detection is not very good. At the beginning the tvbrowser tries to connect to the internet. If this fails a dialog box without hints is shows. This should be enhanced to show the most common problems with the common firewalls (e.g. Norton, GData). The task should also consider using Universal Plug and Play for detection of network ressources.

TV-Browser downloads the data from different server-groups. If one of these server-group fails, a very cryptic message is shown. It looks more like a defect on the user side than a defect on the server side.

== Preselected channels for setup ==

If you start the TV-Browser for the first time, you have to select all channels for yourself. It should be possible to select a country (or other criteria) and get a list of channels preconfigured for that specific country, which matches the needs of that specific user. This means that even users from the same country may have very different program lists because of the region they are in, or because they use different ways to receive their programs (e.g. satellite versus DVB-T). Find a way to calculate a useful initial channel list for the user by using as less criteria (region, country, receiver type, ...) as possible.

== Add new way to display the program table ==

The program table is shown like a German TV guide. US citicens are not used to that style.
* Investigate the US program table style by examples of other tools, websites or by interaction with US program table users.
* The program table should have a feature, so that the user can switch seemlessly between European and US layout style.
* How does this influence the presentation in other lists or tables (e.g. search results, program lists in plugins)?
* Assure that existing plugins still work fine with the changed layout.
* Do tests with real users from the US whether their expectations are met.

== Accessibility improvements ==
TV-Browser is used by people of all ages and abilities. We want to provide better support for handicapped people. This task may include:
* case studies with users to find out where TV-Browser doesn't provide full support for handicapped people
* research of other software projects and their accessibility support (so we don't reinvent the wheel)
* investigation of the APIs that are available in Java for improved accessibility
* implementation of general accessibility improvements in the main TV-Browser application and the core plugins
* creation of a new plugin to provide better accessibility

== Speech plugin ==
In the context of improved accessibility we also have the aim to provide machine speech for TV-Browser. This task may include:
* investigation of the available API in Java for speech support
* implementation of a Speech plugin
* test of the Speech plugin with several speech engines on different platforms (you can do this with beta testers, no need to do everything yourself) to prove the robustness of the solution

== New plugin ideas? ==
As TV-Browser has a plugin interface, you are able to add features we never imagined. Have a cool idea for a Plugin or other stuff concerning TV-Browser ? Just tell us...
Bananeweizenhttps://enwiki.tvbrowser.org/index.php?title=GSOC&diff=2755GSOC2008-03-03T21:29:41Z
Bananeweizen:

=FAQ=

==Which cinemas are available for TV-Browser?==

*'''Cineplex''' cinemas (Bad Kreuznach, Bruchsal, Elmshorn, Frankfurt (Main), Friedrichshafen, Goslar, Limburg, Lippstadt, Mannheim, Marburg, Münster (Westf), Naumburg (Saale), Paderborn, Singen, Suhl, Warburg (Westf))
*'''Breitwand''' cinemas (Herrsching, Seefeld, Starnberg)
*About 100 '''CineStar''' cinemas in over 80 cities, among them also many small cinemas - a list of all cinemas can be found at the [http://www.cinestar.de/html/site.php "CineStar" web pages]
*'''Hollywood Megaplex''' cinemas in Austria (Innsbruck, Linz, St. Pölten, Wien (2))
*[http://www.cineworld-main.de/ '''Cineworld'''] cinema (in the "Mainfrankenpark")
*[http://www.jenaonline.de/filmev/ '''Schillerhof'''] cinema in Jena (Thuringia)

==When is my favorite cinema available?==

Perhaps soon, perhaps never - it's the same as with the TV data: One (or several) cinema(s) will be available, when there is someone providing them. [[Providing_TV_listings|Also ''you'' can settle that - try it!]]

==How can I provide a cinema guide?==

For this the same procedure as when offering TV data is necessary.

* Ask your cinema if you are allowed to use and provide the data

* Read the [[Providing_TV_listings|Provide TV listings]] information

For any problems or questions please use our [http://forum.tvbrowser.org/ forum]. We will help you as fast as possible.

==How can I add the cinema-guide?==
If you are using TV-Browser 2.1 or higher, you can use the channel/channel groups refresh buttons within the settings. For older versions please follow this instructions:

* Click "Settings" -> "TvDataServices" -> "TV-Browser"
* Open "Channel groups"
* Click "Add"
* Now you can type in the URL to the cinema guides
** '''Breitwand''': <nowiki>http://kinotvbrowser.tagus.de/breitwand</nowiki>
** '''CineStar''': <nowiki>http://kinotvbrowser.tagus.de/cinestar</nowiki>
** '''Cineworld''': <nowiki>http://kinotvbrowser.tagus.de/cineworld</nowiki>
** '''Hollywood Megaplex''': <nowiki>http://tv.hermann.czedik.net/megaplex</nowiki>
** '''Jena Schillerhof''': <nowiki>http://tvradio.tv.funpic.de/data/JENA</nowiki>
** '''Wiesbaden Caligari''': <nowiki>http://www.xata.de/tvbrowser/cinevents</nowiki>

* Activate the channel group

* Click the "Refresh" button near the channellist - the new cinemas will appear in the left column soon

* Move the desired cinemas to the right column (list of active channels)

* At last, click the "Refresh" button in the main menu

==I receive the 'No mirror found for group' message==

* Check your web connection
* Check your firewall
* Check the channel group's URL

==Are there some other hints for me?==

Sure. To seperate TV or radio channels from the cinema's data, you can setup a filter rule. So it is quite easy to switch between TV/radio and cinema schedules. For more information have a look at [[Filterrules|Filter rules]] or [[Filterrules_-_Example:_Subtitle|Filter rules - example: Subtitle]].
===2002===

Martin has analysed the TVgenial data format and put the specifications online, hoping that someone would write a client for the data, which would also run on Martin's [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macintosh Mac]. Due to a lack of interest, Martin started to write a client on his own in January 2003, using the plaform independent language [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Java_%28programming_language%29 Java].

He offered this client to [http://www.tvgenial.de TVgenial], as they only have one client, that runs but on Windows systems.

===April 2003===

When TVgenial rejected the offered client, Martin decided to offer his client under the name "TV-Browser" as [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Source Open Source-project] on [http://sourceforge.net/projects/tvbrowser SourceForge].

For legal reasons he removed the part which would load data from TVgenial. Instead, Martin designed the system in order to allow others to read own data (today known as [[Plugin#TV-Data_Services|TV-Data Services]]), which means that a TV-Browser existed, but did not contain any data.

===March 2003===

Til joined Martin and wrote the first public [[Plugin#TV-Data_Services|TV-Data Service]]. He got his TV data in [http://membled.com/work/apps/xmltv/ XMLTV]-format from an Austrian server.

===September 2003===

The host of the server that provided the XMLTV-data discontinued his service, hence TV-Browser didn't have any more data.

===November 2003===

The first version with its own TV data is online. Martin and Til had created an own TV-data format (... as Martin knew by now how to do this http://forum.tvbrowser.org/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif ). Both started with a rather meager choice of channels, but were nevertheless confident, that they soon would be able to stock up the number of available channels.

Since then, the data is directly drawn from the channels, exported into the TV-Browser format and provided on servers, which had been provided by volunteers specially for the TV-Browser project.

===December 2003===

[http://www.wannawork.de Bodo] joins the TV-Browser project. Firstly adds a few smaller [[plugin|plugins]] ([[WebPlugin|Google.de_Suche]], [[WebPlugin|Imdb.com_Suche]]), later supplies the [[TV_Rater|TV-Rater]]-plugin and finally joins the development team.

===May 2004===

ProSiebenSat.1 Media AG refuses the use of their data by the TV-Browser-team - for legal reasons as they claim. Hence, the channels Pro7, Sat1, Kabel1 and N24 are not available. [http://hilfe.tvbrowser.org/viewtopic.php?t=333 Forum]

===May 2004===

The 1.0 Release Candidates are released despite the declining number of users due to the missing channels of the ProSieben-Group.

===June 2004===

Finally an own domain. The forum moves from Bodo's server and the homepage from Sourceforge to its new home: [http://www.tvbrowser.org tvbrowser.org].

===July 2004===

ProSiebenSat.1 Media AG grants the usage of their program preview in TV-Browser.

===September 2004===

Release of 1.0 Final.

===April 2005===

First introduction of a few new [[New_Features_in_TV_browser_2.0|features, which TV-Browser version 2.0 would contain]].

===June 2005===

First Alpha of TV-Browser 2.0 released.

===August 2005===

After alltogether 2 Alpha and 2 Beta versions, Version 2.0 is released at the end of August.
René Mach (aka ds10) joins the team.

===October 2005===

The first Beta of version 2.1 is released. The main focus is on the improvement of the channel group management and the trapping of bugs caused by plugins.

===November 2005===

[http://www.arborelius.se/ Joakim Arborelius] (aka Inforama) joins the team. He is the first developer from abroad and works on the Swedish translations and the [[Swedb]]-plugin.

The Final of TV-Browser 2.1 is released.

===December 2005===

[http://lazs.de Björn Balazs] joins the team via [http://openusability.org OpenUsability]. He will be our consultant.
His first job was helping us in carrying out and analysing our first usability-survey.

===March 2006===

Bodo takes over the project management from Martin. Martin will nevertheless stay with the TV-Browser-team and take over the release-management.

===May 2006===

The first Beta of TV-Browser 2.2 is released. Right after the release [http://www.pcwelt.de/news/software/137085/ PCWelt.de] reports about it, although the Beta had not been published but in our forum.

After another Beta in mid-May, the final version 2.2 is released on our renewed homepage.

__NOTOC__=New features of the GUI=

===A New Look===
{|
|[[Image:TV_Browser2.5beta2_Mainscreen.jpg|thumb|none|150px]]
| valign="top" |
We completely redesigned the GUI paying most attention to improved usability. During the make-over we even removed a layout which was one of the delays in releasing this version.
|}

===Broadcaster Logos===
{|
|[[Image:TV_Browser_2.5beta2_Broadcaster_Logos.jpg|thumb|none|150px]]
| valign="top" |
Probably one of the most requested features is broadcaster logos. They are now included and make navigation in TV-Browser a lot easier. If you are not happy with the logos supplied they can be deactivated or even replaced with your own custom logos! Most English language channels still have no default broadcaster logos.
|}

===Right Toolbar===
{|
|[[Image:TV_Browser_2.5beta2_Right_Toolbar.jpg|thumb|none|50px]]
| valign="top" |
We have implemented a new navigation bar so that you can really appreciate the new broadcaster logos. The old system of drop-down menus has been replaced. The buttons for selecting programs in the "Morning" etc have been replaced by time buttons. These are fully customisable allowing you to create a button for every hour of the day if you so wish!
|}

===Plugin Manager===
{|
|[[Image:TV_Browser_2.5beta2_Plugin_View.jpg|thumb|none|150px]]
| valign="top" |
This is one of my favorite improvements: the tree on the left. The tree shows which plugins have marked which program neatly sorted by date. Every plugin can manage the tree sructure as it wishes. For example the CapturePlugin creates a branch for every CaptureDevice whereas the Favorite Programs Plugin does the same for every one of your favorite programs.

If you want a quick overview of the reminders set up for tomorrow, this is the place to look!

Want to print out a list of your favorite programs? The Plugin Manager tree is the place to do that too. Right click on any folder to export the shows in that folder to another plugin - for example the Print Plugin : Print next weeks reminders or the schedule for one of your favorite programs from the Plugin Manager using the Print Plugin.

You can always hide the plugin manager with the "Show plugin view" button in the toolbar or even faster by pressing F2.
|}

===Toolbar===
{|
|[[Image:TV_Browser_2.5beta2_Toolbar.jpg|thumb|none|150px]]
| valign="top" |
With the removal of the old drop-down menus, we decided to get to work on overhauling the toolbar. You can now insert gaps and position the buttons according to your liking or even remove them.

Additionaly we implemented a filter button. The button changes colour if there is an active filter.
|}

===Context Menu===
{|
|[[Image:TV_Browser_2.5beta2_Context_Menu.jpg|thumb|none|150px]]
| valign="top" |
In version 1.0 there were 2 plugins for the web search: one for Google and one for IMDb because every plugin could only generate one context menu entry. We changed that and we combined both plugins to create a single web plugin. You may now add your own pages, remove pages and so on.
|}

===Filter Improvements===
The filter automatically saves the most recently used filter. It will then be automatically loaded when you launch the TV-Browser.

Furthermore the order of the filters is saved with filter components being put in alphabetical order as well.

Also, two new filter components have been added :
* PluginIcon: shows all programs for which a plugin creates an icon (for example a rating)
* BeanShell filter: enables you to write your own filters.

The time filter can now accept minutes and works correctly across the change between days.

For the German speakers it is now possible to use "und" and "oder" as well as the English equivalents "and" and "or".

= Under the Bonnet =

=== MacOS X ===
Integration with MaxOS X has been greatly improved. There is now a functioning menu, changes are now correctly saved when TV-Browser is closed and the right mouse button has been correctly bound to the correct button.

For the purposes of installation there is a Package. Installing TV-Browser is therefore exactly the same as for most other Mac software.

Additionally, there is a Mac specific plugin called [[Growl]].

=== Linux ===
At long last there is a tray-icon for Linux too making it possible to minimise TV-Browser to the system tray just like you can in Windows. Thanks to Stefan Walkner for this feature which requires Java 1.5 or above.

We have adapted the startup script of Azureus removing the need for the user to create his own.

=== BeanShell ===
It is now possible to write your own plugins with the help of the scripting language BeanShell which should simplify plugin development. Small, simple plugins can be created within minutes.

It's also possible to use BeanShell to create custom Filter Components. Even creating complex filters should be easy!

=== Parameter System ===
We have also introduced a new Paramter System which allows plugins to generate text that other plugins can understand.

For example, the Clipboard Plugin can copy the description of a program into the system clipboard for use in other places. This text should be as adaptable as possible. The user has a template in which he specifies how the copied text should be formatted. For example, the following template :

{channel_name} - {title}
{leadingZero(start_day,"2")}.{leadingZero(start_month,"2")}.{start_year}
{leadingZero(start_hour,"2")}:{leadingZero(start_minute,"2")}-{leadingZero(end_hour,"2")}:{leadingZero(end_minute,"2")}

{splitAt(short_info,"78")}

produces this clipboard output :

Sky One - Stargate SG-1
22.12.2006 01:00-01:50

Sci-fi drama series. A freak act of nature leaves Jack O'Neill trapped on a
planet with, seemingly, ...

A very detailed document describing this system will be made available shortly.

=== Plugin Interface ===
The Plugin Interface has been changed slightly as well. It is now possible, among other things, for plugins to create submenus within context menus. Further details can be found in the description of the new Plugin System in TV-Browser.

= New Plugin Features =
=== Program List Plugin ===
This handy little plugin is the equivalent of the "Now-and-Next" feature you find on most cable and satellite services as well as teletext. It displays a list of channels showing the program on-air now and the one which will follow. The program currently playing has a progress bar as its' background which shows how much of the program is remaining. This bar has been rotated through 90degrees since the last version.

=== Calendar Plugin ===
The Calendar Plugin can now output the description of a program in a format which you can modifiy (as described above in Parameter System.)

=== Clipboard Plugin ===
The clipboard is now capable of copying text into the System clipboard allowing you to copy the description of a program into Word, Excel, Notepad, your webpage and so on. Of course, this text is also fully configurable.

=== Reminder Plugin ===
You can now configure when you want the plugin to remind you that a program is about to start. The executed external program can now be passed parameters as well.

=== Capture Plugin ===

There is a now time-out setting which allows scripts to run for longer than 30 seconds. This can be important for dialogs.

Devices can be imported and exported and the instructions for using this feature have also been drastically simplified. It's now as easy as downloading the device driver, importing it and changing a few paths. Simple!

This plugin has also been adapted to suit the new Parameter System with the new parameters being a lot less cryptic than before.

To remove the need for changing the script and entering local paths, we added the ability to define variables for each device. You can then use these variables for this purpose.

Note : The Capture Plugin is no longer compatible with the 1.0 versions of TV-Browser. There were, unfortunately, too many changes in the new version.

=== Printing Plugin ===

The Printing Plugin has also been dramatically changed. It is now possible to save your settings for example.

Another new feature is the printing list. You can now add individual programs into the print list and then print out only these programs instead of the full tv listings.

=== Program Info Plugin ===

Plugin icons will now be displayed.

=New Plugins =
===Web Plugin ===

TV-Browser has supported Google and IMDB searches for a while now, but what about your favorite website? Maybe you prefer to search with Yahoo! or TVToom. Well now you can add your own websites as well with the help of a new, simple dialog.

===Email Plugin ===
With the Email Plugin it's now possible to pass the description of a TV program to your email program with a simple click of the mouse. Type in the email address of a friend and, in nothing more than a few clicks, you've told your friend about an umpcoming TV event!

===Growl Plugin ===
Mac users can now use the Growl Plugin to remind themselves about programs they want to see.
==Introduction==

Here it is planned to establish a preferably neutral comparison of all EPG-Programs available on the market.

It is no test, there won´t be any subsequent recommendations. Like the ''c't'' I think that everybody should decide on his/her own by means of the features/the gui what is most feasible for him/herself.

But to elaborate the picture I added the votings of other sources. This should at most give a rough direction and is not necessarily concordant with our opinions.

Anyway the comparisons should be as neutral as possible. Therefore here comes the most from the users that expressed theirselves in the forum. In case anybody finds anything incorrect or unfair, he/she is free to change it. That´s a Wiki!

==Programs==

This list currently compares four programs: the ''TV-Browser'', ''TVGenial'', ''Clickfinder'' and ''teXXas''. Some further programs I mention beneath. They are not inlcuded in the comparison deliberately. They are mostly lacking too many features so that you would sort of "compare apples with pears".

In case I forgot a program, please add it or inform me [mailto:bodo@tvbrowser.org].
| valign="top" | TV-Browser is Java-based. Thus it is runnable on all platforms that provide a Java-VM. These are:
Windows, Linux, Solaris, Mac OS X, OS/2.

For Java compatible Cellulars/PDAs there is [[MicroTvBrowser]].

The TV listings in TV-Browsers are loaded by special [[Plugin|plugins]] we call DataServices. This allows us to add new channels to TV-Browser arbitrarily ().
Die TV-Daten werden in TV-Browser über spezielle Plugins - wir nennen sie DataServices - geladen. Auf diese Weise läßt sich TV-Browser beliebig um weitere Sender erweitern (provided that someone has access to the listings and writes a corresponding DataService).

This tutorial describes the basic steps for developing a DataService. For further help we recommend the [http://www.tvbrowser.org/providetvlistings.php TvDataStarterKit] and looking at the [[For Developers|JavaDoc documentation]] of TV-Browser as well as the source code of the existing DataServices.

== Setting up the development environment ==

Add the Jar file
tvbrowser.jar
(this can be found in the TV-Browser installation directory) to the Java class path.

== Implementing ==

Develop a class that implements the
tvdataservice.TvDataService
interface.

Notes:
* To continue using TvDataServices of TV-Browser version 0.9.7 they have to inherit the abstract class AbstractOldTvDataServiceBridge (or implement the new interface).
* Instead of implementing the TvDataService interface directly you can also use the class
util.tvdataservice.AbstractTvDataService
.
* All methods of this class are called by the host application (i.e., TV-Browser) and thus constitute entry points of the plugin.
* The class has to be contained in a package of the same name as the class in lowercase.

==Creating the Jar file==

Next, you need to pack the DataService into a single file, to make installing and providing it to other people simpler.

The following command creates the Jar file:

jar cvf MyTVDataService.jar mytvdataservice

'''Important:''' The name of the Jar file has to be identical to the class name (including the lowercase/uppercase letters).

==Installation==

Copy the newly created Jar file into the ''dataservice'' directory of your TV-Browser installation. Finally, restart TV-Browser and use your DataService by clicking ''Update...'' in the menu ''TV listings''.

==Requirements==

Required skills:
* Using a command line/terminal
* Configuring software using text files
* Creating programs that read websites or other sources and convert them to other formats. The language you use to do this doesn't matter. It should be possible to use anything like VB or Java. Without such a program you would need to convert the data manually. '''We strongly discourage converting the data manually!'''

Download the TvDataStarterKit:
* [[TV_Listings_Tutorial| Get the latest version here]]

The operating system doesn't matter, the tools are written in Java and should run on any platform that runs TV-Browser.

==Providing TV listings==

There are three possibilities to get your listings into TV-Browser:

===Excel/XML===

We wrote a little tool to enter and extract data for one channel in a Excel sheet (we call such tools ''[[Primary Data Service]]'' or ''[[Primary Data Service|PDS]]'').

Alternatively, it's possible to enter and extract the data to and from an XML file.

How this works is explained in the [http://tvbrowser.org/downloads/starterkit/index.html tutorial]. It also explains the other tools you need to prepare the data.

===Primary Data Service===

There is also the possibility of writing your own [[Primary Data Service|PDS]] that reads the data from a website or some other source. Ofcourse, to implement such a service you have to know Java programming. If you do know Java read the [http://www.tvbrowser.org/downloads/docs/providetvdata_v1.1_de.pdf guide] about how to proceed.

====Tips====

* [[Processing Listings - Automatic conversion from Word/Excel to TXT/CSV using OpenOffice]]

===TV data services===

The third way to provide your listings is a program so called [[Plugin#TV-Data Services|TV data services]]. (See [[Tutorial: Development of a TvDataService]]). These will be loaded directly into TV-Browser as a [[plugin]]. An example of such a plugin is the [[NextViewDataService]].

This third possibility should only be used in special cases. The development is much more involved than for a PDS, and everyone who wants to use your service needs to install a plugin, while in the PDS case he only needs to enter an URL.

==More tips==

=== TV listings usage permit ===

To be allowed to use the listings of different TV/radio stations an official permission of the broadcasting service is needed. Here you can read an example mail

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am a volunteer of the free electronic program guide 'TV-Browser' (for information, please see
"http://www.tvbrowser.org/"). This is an open source project without any commercial interests,
meanwhile we already count over 80,000 active users.

We wish to extend our program magazine by your [station/stations] [STATIONNAME/S]. That is why
I ask you to furnish me an access to your press area or admit my address to your press
distribution list and to give me the permission for preparing and providing your program data
on our web servers for the users of the program guide. If your organisation does not carries on
a press area or distribution list, I ask for an allowance to read out the data of [STATION URL]
in the form of an automated procedure.

Moreover I would need your station emblem for viewing in the environment of the program
information if possible and it would be nice, if you could also send me an optional permission
for using program pictures within the program area of ''TV-Browser''.

The program data is stored at our web servers and protected against unfamiliar exploitations
because of the application specific format. The user of ''TV -Browser'' gets an emphatic note
about the data's rights holder. Program data of expired days gets deleted after one day so that
there is no deposition chance.

Yours faithfully,
[ABSENDERNAME]

You should use friendly, but decisive wording.

'''Important:''' Do not forget to provide them with your name, address, phone and fax number, if available and usable.

== Introduction==

Important note: This is '''only for developers''' that '''know what they are doing'''. A normal user should not try to follow this guide. We will not provide any support for any problems that may occur with this guide or SVN. It also has to be assumed that not all features are complete and/or bug free.

So, don't complain if this version of TV-Browser gets lost in data nirvana ;-)

To get TV-Browser from [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subversion_%28software%29 SVN] and to compile you need the following tools:
{|
|'''Name'''
|'''Description'''
|'''URL'''
|-
|SVN
|Tool to access SVN and copy the files to your PC
|http://subversion.tigris.org
|-
|ANT
|Ant is the so called build tool. It compiles and creates the jar/exe file.
|http://ant.apache.org
|-
|valign=top|JDK
|The Java development kit. It contains the Java compiler and all required libraries to build TV-Browser.
|valign=top|http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp
|}

== Downloading TV-Browser from SVN ==

To download TV-Browser you have to enter the following:

svn co <nowiki>https://svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/tvbrowser/trunk</nowiki> tvbrowser

== Compiling TV-Browser ==

After downloading the files, they have to be compiled using Ant.

To do this you have to enter

ant runtime

Some alternative commands are also possible. You can find out about them using

ant

For example,

ant exe

creates a Windows exe file.

== Done ==

Now the runtime directory should contain a newly compiled TV-Browser build. Congratulations!

== TV-Browser and Eclipse ==
This is a guide about setting up TV-Browser in [http://www.eclipse.org Eclipse].

=== Preparations ===
You need the following to allow working on TV-Browser in Eclipse:
{|
|'''Name'''
|'''Description'''
|'''URL'''
|-
|Eclipse
|The development environment; download the newest release for best results!
|http://www.eclipse.org
|-
|Subclipse
|SVN plugin for Eclipse; [http://subclipse.tigris.org/install.html Installation guide]
|http://subclipse.tigris.org/
|}

=== Preparing Eclipse ===

# Install Eclipse
# Install Subclipse ([http://subclipse.tigris.org/install.html Guide)

=== Checking out TV-Browser ===
Choose "File" -> "New" -> "Other" and then "SVN" "Checkout Project from SVN".

Now select "Create a new repository location". The URL should be '''<nowiki>https://svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/tvbrowser</nowiki>'''.
Enter "tvbrowser" in the "trunk" field; preferably create a new project (to do so select "Check out as a project configured using the New Project Wizard").

Now the computer will take some time to download everything. When it's done right click on the new project folder. Select "Properties" -> "Java-Build-Path" tab "Source" and click "Add folder"; select the ''src'' directory.

Done! If you're annoyed by the many warnings just exclude a few plugins from the src directory. To do this go to the same dialog as before: extend the folder and select "Excluded", click "Edit...". In the "Exclusion Patterns" group select "Add" and enter "*plugin". Now there should be no more unwanted messages.

== Program data quality ==

The program data is received from the press office of each broadcast station.

As a matter of fact the data is automatically processed, hence the quality depends on the data obtained.

Some broadcast stations provide XML-Data with structured information. Others just provide the information in a proprietary and unstructured format like RTF.

As a result there are some broadcast stations where ie. the actors are separated, on others they are not.
Some stations deliver information about the audioformat (mono, stereo, dual or Dolby-Surround), others don't.

Some stations add some additional information, like information about the cast, which can't be separated automatically and so this information is within the description of the broadcast.

Also classification of the data is not available (like: movie, quiz-show,...) and if it is available this data is also presented in a proprietary format and also the content itself is not standard (i.e. one station says "Documentation", while the other will call it "Info-Show",...).

As a matter of fact we are free of charge and so we cannot reformat all the data by hand.

For everyone interested to present us data or who wants to know how the data is processed can find additional information in our [[Providing_TV_listings|tutorial]].

[[category:Usage]]
Bananeweizenhttps://enwiki.tvbrowser.org/index.php?title=Filter_rules&diff=2684Filter rules2007-09-28T19:28:57Z
Bananeweizen:

== Filterrules ==

== Create a filter ==

== Create a filter component ==

== Examples for filterrules ==

A detailed example can be found at: [[Filterrules_-_Example:_Subtitle| Filterrules - Example: Subtitle]] (to be written..) or [[Filterrules_-_Example:_Films| Filterrules - Example: Films]]
==General==
===What is TV-Browser?===

TV-Browser is a digital TV guide. It enables you to load the current TV program from the internet and view it offline with a great visual style. There is no need for a continuous online connection.

===Which operating systems are supported by TV-Browser?===

TV-Browser will run on all systems for which a Java Runtime Environment is available.
Normally this is the case for all desktop systems. The [http://jdl.sun.com/webapps/getjava/BrowserRedirect?locale=en&host=java.com Sun Java Runtime Environment] must be installed prior to installing TV-Browser.

Java installation instructions can be found [[Install_Java|here]].

===Why is TV-Browser for free?===

The TV program data is put at our disposal free of charge. The servers from which TV-Browser loads the data are provided by users who support us. Besides that we just like working on this project.

===What differentiates TV-Browser from similar, but non-free/commercial services?===

Paid services use professional editorial staff that prepare the program data or buy prepared data from another service. This is accordingly cost intensive.

Our data is prepared automatically. Therefore we only need to maintain and improve the software that prepares the data.

==Provided channels==
===Which channels are provided by TV-Browser?===

A list of all currently offered channels can be found [http://www.tvbrowser.org/component/option,com_tvbchannellist/Itemid,34 here].

===Does TV-Browser support radio stations?===

We are currently providing a few programs of radio stations. Possibly more will follow.

===I'm missing the channel $FAVORITECHANNEL - can you provide this channel?===

As for all channels, we first need the authorization to publicize the data.
Then the data has to be edited so that TV-Browser can use them. This can be done automatically, but must be prepared and maintained.

We currently provide over 50 channels. The more channels we provide the more effort is needed to maintain them, so we can't provide as many channels as desired.

But TV-Browser offers the possibility to use channels not provided by us directly.

===Which possibilities do I have to import my own TV-data into TV-Browser?===

TV-Browser offers a Plugin-Interface for Data-Import. This allows TV-Data to be imported into TV-Browser. Information on importing data can be found in the [[Providing_TV_listings| Developers-Section]].

Meanwhile offering personal TV-Data has been made easy with our [[TV_Listings_Tutorial| TV-Data-Starterkit]].

==Solving problems==

===TV-Browser doesn't load new Program-Data===

A internet connection is necessary to update Program-Data. Check if TV-Browser can access the internet.

See also [[How to fix update problems]].

Check if the clock of your operating system is configured correctly. This step is necessary for TV-Browser to update the right Program-Data for the different TV Channels. Otherwise it can occur that TV-Browser doesn't load the required Data because it expects the Data to be obsolete.
[[de:FAQ]]

===Everything is grey! Help! All my windows are grey! What can I do?===

Update the drivers of your graphics card or start TVBrowser using TVBrowser_noDD.exe.
This avoids that java uses DirectX to display the windows.

===How can I start TV-Browser?===

On Windows systems you must doubleclick the file "tvbrowser.exe". From the console you can start TV-Browser with

java -jar tvbrowser.jar

First you have to change to the appropriate directory. Alternatively you can use the "tvbrowser.sh" shell script.

===Do I have the right Java-Version installed?===

If you enter

java -version

at the console (Windows: DOS-Box, Mac OS X: Terminal), the output should look something like this:

java version "1.4.1_01"

Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.1_01-b01)

Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.1_01-b01, mixed mode)

If you see a lower version number than 1.4 or an error message appears, then you must install Java. [http://java.sun.com/getjava/index.html Download Java]

===When starting TV-Browser I receive the error message "Could not find Main class"===

You must start TV-Browser with

java -jar tvbrowser.jar

'''MS-Windows''': Im Explorer, Menü Extras - Ordneroptionen --> Dateitypen JAR auf erweitert klicken. Dem Vorgang open (auf bearbeiten klicken) sollte ungefähr das hier zugeordnet sein: "C:\Programme\Java\j2re1.4.0\bin\javaw.exe" -jar "%1"

===TV-Browser comes with the message: No mirror server found===

If this message appears when you first start TV-Browser, then this is usually because of the fact that TV-Browser can't connect to the Internet. Therefore, you should check the configuration of your network connection. See also [[FAQ#TV-Browser_doesn't_load_new_Program-Data|here]].

If you have registered a mirror server manually in the preferences, please check your input there.

===When starting TV Browser my archiving program opens===

With the installation of Java, .jar files are assigned to the Java VM. If tvbrowser.jar does not open by doubleclicking it (ms Windows), the archiving program probably overwrote this allocation. See [[FAQ#When starting TV-Browser I receive the error message "Could not find Main class"|When starting TV-Browser I receive the error message "Could not find Main class"]]

===When I start TV-Browser I receive the message "Please start TV-Browser in the TV-Browser folder". What does that mean?===

You must start TV-Browser with

java -jar tvbrowser.jar

You cannot specify a path to tvbrowser.jar, so you have to use the 'cd' command to change to the folder where tvbrowser.jar resides first.

===The start times of the programs are one hour off. What's the matter?===

TV-Browser takes into consideration the location (timezone) of both the television station and the user. In this way TV-Browser can correctly display the times of programs from stations in another timezone.Please make sure your system clock is to the right timezone.

===TV Browser doesn't show pictures for the transmissions. Why not?===

===Under OS/2 TV Browser uses the wrong time===

==Tips==
===I've installed two Operating Systems and I want to use the same preferences for both. Can that be done?===

Yes. TV-Browser stores the preferences in the [[Home_directory| Home directory]] of the system.
When you start TV-Browser like this (command is case-sensitive):

java -Duser.home=/EINSTELLUNGEN -jar tvbrowser.jar

then it will store and/or use the preferences in the indicated folder. In this way two TV-Browser installations on different systems can share the same preferences.

===I would like to make a shortcut to TV-Browser on my Linux Desktop. How can that be done?===

Start TV-Browser with the help of the shell Script.

===Can I change the language used for TV-Browser?===

You can change the language in the Preferences window under ''General settings--> [[Settings:GeneralSettings#Locale| Locale]]''.

===I have multiple computers and would like to share the TV-data, so that I only have to download the data once.===

You can set the folder where the TV-Data is stored in the Preferences window under ''Technical settings--> [[Settings:TechnicalSettings#Directories| Directories]]''.
If all computers use the same folder, they'll also have the same TV-data available.

==Plugins==
===What are Plugins?===

Plugins are program modules which extend the basic functionality of TV-Browser.

===How do I install a Plugin?===

Installing, activating and configuring Plugins is explained [[Plugin#Installation_of_Plugins| here]].

===How do I develop my own Plugin?===

You can find that info on the [[For_Developers| Developer part of the WIKI]].

===How do I let other people know about my Plugin?===

You can create an account at our [http://www.tvbrowser.org/content/view/8/14/lang,de_DE/| website] which you can use to upload your Plugin. Just complete the login form.

==Offering webspace==
===I read that you need more servers to host the TV data. What do you need exactly?===

We store the TV program data in the form of files on Web servers (HTTP).

===How is the data uploaded to my server?===

The upload is done by using FTP. rsync is also possible.

===What is the expected bandwidth use?===

Please tell us your bandwidth limit, we will set up the server accordingly. We do not intend to supervise and/or limit the bandwidth use of a particular server in any way. We are always looking to add further servers in order keep the load of a particular server as small as possible.

===How much webspace do I need?===

20-50 MB

===Was muß ich als "Server-Spender" beachten?===

If no error message appears but nothing new is downloaded, check the date settings of your computer!

===Is a Firewall installed?===

Your [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firewall_(networking) firewall] should allow TV-Browser to use outgoing port 80.

The name of the proces that actually initiates the connection, depends on the Operating System you use, e.g.

* Windows: javaw.exe
* Mac OS X: JavaApplicationStub

You can read about how to do this in the documentation of your firewall or in this [[Firewalls|guide]].

===Is GData Antivir installed?===

GData Antivir has problems if internet traffic monitoring is enabled. Please disable internet traffic monitoring.

===Is a proxy installed?===

If you are using a [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proxy_server proxy server], you have to set it up in TV-Browsers [[Settings:TechnicalSettings| Proxy Settings]].

===Is the data path correct?===

Make sure the path entered in ''TV-Browser/Settings.../Technical settings/Directories'' exists.

==Only some days/channels are missing==

If only the data of some days or channels are missing you should first check
[http://tvbrowser.awn-design.de/tvbrowser/ here] or [http://sender.wannawork.de here] if the data for that day is available.

If that's the case you should update a second time. Sometimes you encounter a [[Mirrors|mirror server]] that is not completely up to date.

If this doesn't help you should remove all files with names starting with 200*_ in ''Install path''/tvdata/tvbrowserdataservice.TvBrowserDataService. These contain the data of the servers.

Also remove all files in ''Install path''/tvdata with de_ or at_ and try to update again. If this still doesn't work ask in our [http://forum.tvbrowser.org forum].

[[Image:Tvbrowser_mainscreen.png]]

TV-Browser's GUI is seperated in multiple sections.

==Program table==

In the center of the screen you will find the program table. It lists the TV stations and their shows. Shows that are currently running are highlighted in blue. A darker and a lighter shadow indicate how many percent of the show is already over. The darker section will continue to move downwards as the show is running. A show that has mostly a light shadow has started just recently. If it has mostly dark shadow, then it is going to end soon.

Shows that have already aired are displayed in a gray font and with faded out icons. Shows that are still about to be aired have a black font and normal icons.

Additionally, shows can be marked by [[plugin]]s. These shows are highlighted in red and have an icon in the bottom right corner for every plugin that marked this show. In the example picture above, the movie ''Bettgeflüster & Babyglück'' has been marked by the [[Reminder]] plugin.

Further icons may be displayed underneath the starting time (see [[explanation of symbols]]). Each plugin can display icons of its own in addition to the default icons. For example, all shows display the pie chart icon provided by the [[TV Rater]] plugin. You can choose which icons will be displayed in which order in the [[settings]] dialog. If there is not enough space to display all necessary icons, TV Browser will only show as much icons as there is space available, according to the order you selected.

==Plugin overview==

In this overview you can easily see which plugins have currently marked which TV shows. Each plugin can control the tree structure in its own way. For example, in capture plugin each capture device has its own branch and in favorite shows plugin it is the same for every of your favorite shows.

This is the ideal place to have a quick look which reminders are currently pending.

The tree is also ideal to create a quick print list. You can click the right mouse button on every folder and export its contents to another plugin, for example the print plugin. This way it is no problem to for example print all reminders for next week or the air times of a particular favorite show.

==Toolbar==

Just above the program table there is TV Browser's toolbar. It provides the possibility to quickly access all the [[plugin]]s. It can be configured in the [[settings - configure toolbar]] dialog.

==Time buttons==

Right of the program table you will find buttons with times on them. They allow you to quickly jump to these times of the day.

==Day list==

Underneath the time buttons you have the possibility to select the day for the program table. Of course you can only select those days for which TV Browser has already downloaded data. For legal reasons, it is unfortunately impossible to go more than one day back "into the past".

==Channel list==

The last section on the right hand side is the channel list. Here you can quickly jump to a certain station.

==Miscellaneous==

TV Browser's GUI can be customized in many ways. For example, you may choose to show or hide single elements. Further possibilities of customization are explained under [[Settings]].

==Introduction==

Everyone with a bit of programming experience can provide channels for TV-Browser. These channels will then be displayed in TV-Brower as so called "channel groups". To use channel lists which are not included by default you first have to add their URLs in Settings -> [[Settings:TVDataServices|TVDataServices]] -> TV-Browser -> Channel groups.

==Update the channel groups==

To get channel groups from other 3rd-party providers displayed in TV-Browser you have to update the list of available channel groups.

Do do this go to Settings -> Channels table -> Channel groups and click the "Refresh list" button. Please note that you have to be online to do this.

After the update new channel groups have been added to the list. Next you have to activate the channel groups you need. To do that simply choose the appropriate group and click the Enable button. It's recommended to select the needed channel groups only.

If you want to read some information about a certain channel group just select it and click the Info button.

==Update channels==

In Settings -> Channels table -> Channels click "Update channel list". The newly selected channels will show up in the left listbox. To subscribe to a channel just move it to the right listbox using the appropriate buttons in the middle. To finally add the new channels click Apply and finally update your TV listings.

What are Regular Expressions?
Regular Expressions are powerfull wildcards. For example by using ".*ter\b.*" you will find all shows whose title includes a word that ends with "ter".

Further information upon "Regular Expressions" can be found in this [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regular_expression]Wikipedia Artikel.

An explanation of the Syntax used in the TV-Browser can be found in the "Java-Documentation".
[[category:Usage]]
Bananeweizenhttps://enwiki.tvbrowser.org/index.php?title=Parameter_System&diff=2669Parameter System2007-09-28T19:16:07Z
Bananeweizen:

== What is the "Parameter System"? ==

The Parameter System enables dynamically generated texts. For example, this is used in the e-mail plugin to create the body text of an e-mail. In the Capture-Plugin it is used to pass parameters to 3rd party applications like WinTV.

== Structure ==

The structure of the Parameter System is fairly simple. Any text surrounded by { and } will be replaced by variables or function results.

For example, the result of the following text will be:
The title is {title}

when the title of the broadcast is "Coronation Street"
The title is Coronation Street!

You are also able to use functions to combine or split text.

For example:

The title is {isset(original_title, title)}
In this case, the original title will be used. If the original title is not available, the regular title of the broadcast will be shown.

Functions can also be nested:
The title is {clean(isset(original_title, title))}

Now, all special characters will be replaced by underscores "_".

You can also define your own parameter texts:
The original title is {isset(original_title, "not available, so sorry!")}

In this example the original title of the broadcast will be replaced by "not available, so sorry!" if the respective field is empty.
The original title is not available, so sorry!

A complete list of parameters and functions is provided with each plug-in. Why is that? Because each plug-in can add its own functions and parameters.

== Special Characters ==
If you want to use special characters like '\', '{' or '}' they have to be prefixed with a '\' (backslash).

This means:
{| border="1" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="3"
!Input
!Result
|-
|<nowiki>\\</nowiki>
|<nowiki>\</nowiki>
|<nowiki>\\\\</nowiki>
|<nowiki>\\</nowiki>
|-
|<nowiki>\{</nowiki>
|<nowiki>{</nowiki>
|-
|<nowiki>\}</nowiki>

{{GenericTemplate|templateheader=This article needs some attention|templatebody=The original article [http://wiki.tvbrowser.org/index.php/Logging_Aktivieren Logging Aktivieren] has better formatting and is much more readable. Please help with the improvement of this article.}}

To activate logging in TVBrowser a setting in the configuration file has to be made.

In the TV-Browser folder are the files windows.properties, linux.properties and osx.properties.

You need to open the file for your OS (Windows = windows.properties ...) then just add the folder where the log file is stored. For Windows you have to change "\" into "/".

Some examples:

Windows:
logdirectory=C:/

Linux:
logdirectory=/home/bodum/

Now the log file will be created in the respective folder. It will be overwritten at every program start.
